Al-Anon and Alateen at Mokena Fellowship Center

Someone Else's Drinking Can Affect Your Life, Too

You do not have to face it alone. Al-Anon and Alateen offer confidential, peer-based support for people affected by a relative's or friend's drinking.

Here, family members and young people can find understanding, shared experience, and practical hope.

Al-Anon

Al-Anon is a mutual-support fellowship for anyone whose life has been affected by someone else's drinking-whether that person is currently drinking or not.

Members may be spouses, partners, parents, adult children, siblings, relatives or friends. No referral, diagnosis or connection to an AA member is required.

What Al-Anon Can Offer

You cannot control someone else's drinking—but you can find support.

Al-Anon does not provide treatment, counseling, or advice about how to make another person stop drinking. Members share their own experience, strength, and hope and learn to focus on their own well-being and choices.

Through meetings, members may find:

  • Understanding from people with similar experiences
  • Healthier ways to respond to difficult situations
  • Relief from isolation, fear, or confusion
  • Tools for establishing appropriate boundaries
  • Encouragement to care for themselves
  • Hope, whether the person who drinks seeks help or not

I The only requirement for Al-Anon membership is to be affected by someone else's drinking.

No. You are welcome to listen until you feel comfortable.

No. Al-Anon is a mutual-support fellowship. It can complement professional care but does not replace counseling, medical treatment, or emergency support.

Al-Anon and Alateen are separate meetings. Every Sunday from 6-7 p.m., AA, Al-Anon, and Alateen meetings are held simultaneously at MFC. Individuals and family members can attend the program that is appropriate for them while pursuing recovery and support.

Yes, if that person qualifies for both fellowships. At an Al-Anon meeting, members focus on Al-Anon recovery rather than discussing membership in another fellowship.

You Deserve Support, Too

You did not cause another person's drinking; you cannot control it, and you cannot cure it.

But you can find understanding, support, and hope for yourself.
