How the Mokena Fellowship Center Works

One Center, Many Autonomous Groups

Mokena Fellowship Center is the nonprofit organization that owns, operates, and cares for the building. AA, Al-Anon, Alateen, and CoDA groups hold meetings at the center while remaining autonomous and responsible for their own group decisions.

MFC manages matters affecting the shared facility and fellowship as a whole, including building operations, finances, safety, common spaces, events, and center-wide communications.

This helps explain why there are both MFC leaders and autonomous meeting groups.

Leadership & Governance

The Board of Directors

Board Responsibilities

The Board of Directors is the caretaker of The Mokena Fellowship Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. It is responsible for the financial, disciplinary, legal, and contractual actions, as well as State and Federal Reporting.

Board Members

Board members help ensure that the Fellowship not only survives but also thrives for years to come—a beacon of hope for those who suffer.

A Board member's term of service is three (3) years, and members must have five (5) years of sobriety. The Board consists of a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, and three Directors, one of whom serves as the Chairperson of the Steering Committee.

Each year at the annual election, two (2) members roll out of service, and two (2) new members roll in. All members have full voting rights.

The Steering Committee

AA Notebook sits on a table during a business meeting

Responsibilities

The Steering Committee manages MFC’s day-to-day operations and serves as the Fellowship’s business meeting. It brings members together to hear updates, address current needs, plan activities, and consider ideas that support the center.

It can approve expenditures of up to $500.

It meets on the second Sunday of every month (except in May, when it meets on the third Sunday)

Members

Elected Officers are voted in by the membership on the second Sunday of March. All other roles are voted in by the Steering Committee.

  1. Al-Anon Liaison gives voice to our ever-growing Al-Anon community
  2. Building Maintenance maintains or organizes the maintenance of all our appliances, keeping us in compliance with all safety standards, and performs any small repairs as needed
  3. Education Coordinator develops events designed to increase our understanding of the AA program
  4. Housekeeping Coordinator cleans our building until it shines
  5. Keys Coordinator manages all our keys and initiates our new chairperson on our procedures.
  6. Literature Coordinator manages the coins and literature
  7. Newsletter Coordinator prepares and distributes monthly content to the Fellowship's membership distribution list.
  8. Sunday Breakfast Coordinator coordinates the schedule of chairs for each month, and these chairs, in turn, provide speakers and chairs for each meeting. The Coordinator also collects door monies, runs the raffles, collects the 7th Tradition, and coordinates the food.
  9. Supplies Coordinator purchases coffee, filters, toilet paper, paper towels, and cleaning supplies.
  10. Website Coordinator maintains the website, admin email address, and online chat features.

This takes a lot of work, and many hands make light work. All of these members donate their time to our Fellowship because they know service work keeps them sober, but they can’t do it alone.

Please consider joining our Steering Committee and being of service to our Fellowship.

Keep it Simple at the Fellowship

Black office cabinet with two doors and two drawers.

Black Cabinets • Fellowship Supplies

The black cabinet in the small lounge/storage area (southwest corner), just outside the women's restroom, contains shared household supplies for Fellowship use.

If you notice we're running low on a needed item, please restock it from the cabinet inventory. You'll find extra paper products, including toilet paper, hand towels, paper towels, and tissues, to help replenish supplies as needed.

When you see we're low, now you know where to go.

When the cabinet itself is low, contact our Supplies Chair.

Please remember: these supplies are for Fellowship use only, not for personal use. and skills are appreciated.

Blue Lockers • Meeting Storage

Groups that use materials not supplied by MFC may request a locker, subject to availability. One locker per meeting.
